Coercivity conditions and variational inequalities

Various coercivity conditions appear in the literature in order to guarantee solutions for the Variational Inequality Problem. We show that these conditions are equivalent to each other and that they are not only sufficient, but also necessary for the set of solutions to be non-empty and bounded.

Variational principles: summary and problems

2.1 Differentiability and first order conditions If a function f : R → R has partial derivatives ∂if(x) = limt→0 t−1(f(x + tei) − f(x)) which exist and are continuous on R, it is a C1(R) function, and is differentiable at every x in the sense that f(x + h) − f(x) −∇f(x) · h = o(‖h‖) as h → 0. This means it can be approximated linearly, and the derivative is the linear map on R given by Df(x)(h)...

compactifications and function spaces on weighted semigruops

chapter one is devoted to a moderate discussion on preliminaries, according to our requirements. chapter two which is based on our work in (24) is devoted introducting weighted semigroups (s, w), and studying some famous function spaces on them, especially the relations between go (s, w) and other function speces are invesigated. in fact this chapter is a complement to (32). one of the main fea...

Variational Principles in Renormalization Theory

The variational principles introduced by Kadanoff et al in the renormahzatmn theory are analyzed. It is shown that the values for the specific heat critical exponent a which can be found by a variational method are restricted to a < 0 or t~ = 1 (first order transition). The reason is the confluence of the singularities in the free energy and in the variational parameters. A full implementation ...
